Users Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such medications should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
