The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
