Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
