The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
